Santa Margarita Catholic High School students, faculty and staff rallied together raising $6,500 to support relief in Haiti following the devastating earthquake that killed and injured thousands.

The school’s campus ministry department, along with students involved in the school’s peer ministry program, organized the drive which ran Jan. 26-29.

“I am proud that together we were able to give a country that has so little, a small gift that to them is a huge gift,” said senior Kelly Sheeran, a member of Peer Ministry, the student organization that helps put on Campus Ministry events and works to build the faith aspect of the school. “We put our quarters together and were able to make a difference.”

Funds from the drive went to Catholic Relief Services to assist the Catholic nonprofit as the organization responds to the aftermath of the massive quake that struck near the capital of Port-au-Prince. Catholic Relief Services is the official international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United States and provides assistance to people in need in more than 100 countries.

“Our students definitely rallied to meet the needs of others,” said Campus Ministry Director Nancy Hormuth. “That truly makes a big statement about their caring hearts and compassion for those suffering. In the Bible it says faith without works is like a body without breath. Our students are alive with the love of Christ, showing great love, care and compassion for the suffering and poor of Haiti.”

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and was still recovering from deadly 2008 hurricanes when the earthquake hit. Staff members with Catholic Relief Services are bringing relief to the millions affected by the recent earthquake.
