Beckstrand Cancer Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to improving and enhancing quality of life for cancer patients and their families, will host its inaugural Hope & Harmony Run/Walk on February 27, 2010. The 5K run/walk begins at 8 a.m. with a 1-mile kids run beginning at 10 a.m. Hosted on the UC Irvine campus at the corner of West Peltason and Campus Drive in Irvine, the event is expected to draw as many as 2,500 spectators, athletes and volunteers of diverse cultures and backgrounds.
“Because cancer doesn't discriminate, we have challenged the local community to come together in a show of hope and support—celebrating life, raising awareness and generating funds that will enable the Foundation to continue its important work assisting families from all ethnic backgrounds located throughout Orange County,” says Kaerie Ray, Race Director and Beckstrand Cancer Foundation’s Director of Development & Communications.
All proceeds of the Hope & Harmony Run/Walk will benefit programs that provide direct assistance to local patients whose diagnosis has resulted in financial burden. These programs help with day-to-day basic needs, such as rent/mortgage, food, gas/transportation, utilities, health insurance premiums, medical co-payments and prescriptions. Since 1974, the Foundation has served as a resource for the cancer community, alleviating the financial burden of the disease so that patients can focus on treatment and recovery. Runners and walkers can participate as individuals or as teams in the 5k race. Kids ages 14 and under can participate as individuals or as teams in the 1-mile race. All races will be timed and winners will be announced. Also, as a thank you to participants, a family-friendly runner’s village, expo area, and winner’s circle will contribute to the fun race environment, and will include food from local vendors, music, and other pre- and post-event race activities.
The presenting sponsor of the Hope & Harmony 5K Run/Walk is O’Connell Landscape Maintenance, a staple of the Orange County community offering quality service since 1971. Other event sponsors include: McCarthy, Louis E. Stockton, Shulman Bunn, LLC, Cal National Bank, McCormick and Schmick’s, Daphne’s, OC Smile and Pop Chips.
Registration for the 5K is $35/pp and includes t-shirt, bib number and goody bag. First, second and third place winners will receive recognition gifts. Children can sign up for the 1-mile kids run for just $25/pp. All child participants will receive a t-shirt, bib number, goody bag and race recognition gift. Incentive gifts will also be awarded to teams who raise the most funds. If participants are unable to attend the event, phantom runners can send a $25 donation and receive a Hope & Harmony t-shirt and recognition at the run/walk. About Beckstrand Cancer Foundation
Beckstrand Cancer Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1974 by Dr. Grant Beckstrand and a group of doctors specializing in the treatment and care of cancer patients. For more than 35 years, the Foundation’s goal has been to improve and enhance the quality of life for cancer patients and their families. This mission is achieved through an Individual Patient Assistance program in which the Foundation is unique in providing financial assistance, patient advocacy, supportive counseling and practical help to patients in the midst of their cancer treatment and struggling to cope with critical survival needs. While research is imperative to finding a cure, approximately 1.4 million new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in 2010, and little support is available to assist these victims with day-to-day living and basic needs. This is where Beckstrand Cancer Foundation serves as the missing link. For more information about Beckstrand Cancer Foundation, visit www.Beckstrand.org.
